About Us
The Texas Rugby Academy strives to identify, develop and prepare 7s rugby players with the objective of producing athletes to compete on USA or other national teams and future Olympic teams while contributing to the continued growth of the game by providing opportunities to train and compete at Youth, High School, Collegiate and Elite levels. TRA's goal is to narrow the gap between amateur domestic players and international sevens rugby by accelerating the development of athletes not in full-time residency at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA. Developing America’s next generation of Olympic and International rugby players is a key goal for TRA. By developing the pathways for rugby enthusiasts of all ages, TRA provides the opportunities for coaches, players and referees to develop and participate in elite level rugby.
The TRA will provide athletes with top level coaching, physical development, mental preparation and playing competition to accelerate their personal development as rugby players in line with current USA Eagles High Performance criteria. The TRA is a long-term, systemic approach to athlete development through a year-round training program. Currently, the Texas Rugby Academy plans to compete as a 7s club in the Red River Rugby Conference and as an internationally competitive team at invitational tournaments across the globe.
News
The Texas Rugby Academy is dedicated to the High Performance Development of elite level athletes. Our mission is to place athletes in the best possible position to excel through sport by fostering teamwork, camaraderie, hard work and integrity. The Texas Rugby Academy is designed for up-and-coming male and female players dedicated to making rugby their sport of choice with a goal to advance to national, international, and Olympic teams. We foster an internal culture of creativity and innovation that provides a leading edge learning environment for those who enroll. For players, there is a strong focus on position-specific education, mental toughness, rugby intelligence and skill development. We offer High Performance programs with emphasis on technical, tactical and mental skills development. The TRA will positively influence your view on how rugby can be played, at an intensity and pace that will transform your game. Couple these with the sound basic fundamentals we will ensure that you will have the best possible platform from which to fulfill your rugby potential.
When it comes to rugby training and conditioning, the TRA bases it’s program around the latest in sport science and research and aligns to information shared with USA Rugby. We place a much emphasis on correct fundamental movement and body alignment combined with strength and overall conditioning by adopting a periodized rugby-specific format, enabling players to deliver peak performance in-season. With rugby being a high-contact sport where timing of peak fitness and body conditioning is crucial, this approach is key. The TRA will take each player through a training program beginning with body alignment and core work and correct resistance training and then progress to rugby-specific training and conditioning, incorporating the correct power training techniques that are critical for optimal performance and confidence on the field.
The Texas Rugby Academy utilizes a modular approach. Players will follow a routine that is coordinated by the coaching staff. The program is very full, yet it aims to achieve a balance between lectures, practice sessions on the field, experimental activities, tournaments and social functions. The starting point is the rugby and life skills evaluation. This provides the basis on which specific individual goals will be developed within each player. It also provides the basis for evaluating both the players and the course throughout the year.
During the course of the year players will undergo coaching in modules focusing on: analysis, visual skills, basic skills, contact skills, set phase attache, set phase defense, positional specific skills, breakdown, breakdown attack, breakdown defense, team and positional strategy, set phase unit attack, set phase unit defense, kicking, conditioning, speed and agility.
